Project Brief

BinaryGrace developed the website for A Year of Iron and Pixels, a story driven book project based on a 390 day personal journey of discipline, desire, belief, and pushing beyond self imposed limits.

The project required more than a standard book website. The main WordPress website needed to tell the story through engaging content and visuals, while a separate Shopify store handled book purchases.

The website combines WordPress, Shopify, custom development, and API based integration to create a connected experience between the main website and the online book store.

Challenges

The goal was to create a visually engaging website that could tell the story behind the book while also creating excitement around the number of books available.

One of the key requirements was to start with a 1,000 book countdown on the WordPress website.

Whenever a visitor purchased a book through the Shopify store, the available book count needed to update automatically on the WordPress website.

This meant the WordPress website and Shopify store needed to work together even though they were running on separate platforms.

The project needed to:

  • Create a strong story driven website experience
  • Build the main website on WordPress
  • Use Shopify for book sales
  • Connect Shopify purchases with the WordPress website
  • Start the book counter at 1,000
  • Automatically reduce the counter when books were purchased
  • Create a smooth journey from the story to the purchase
  • Maintain a responsive experience across devices
  • Keep the website structure SEO friendly

Solution

BinaryGrace developed the main website in WordPress and integrated it with a dedicated Shopify store for book purchases.

The WordPress website focuses on storytelling, content, branding, and user engagement, while Shopify handles the eCommerce side of the project.

We created a custom connection between the two platforms so that purchase information from Shopify could be used to update the book counter displayed on the WordPress website.

This allowed the client to keep the storytelling experience on WordPress while using Shopify’s eCommerce functionality to manage book orders.

Shopify Integration

Book Store Integration

A dedicated Shopify store was connected to the WordPress website so visitors can move from learning about the book to purchasing it.

The purchase process takes place through Shopify, providing the client with a dedicated eCommerce platform for managing book sales and orders.

Dynamic Book Countdown

One of the most unique features of the project is the 1,000 book countdown displayed on the WordPress website.

The counter initially starts at:

1,000 Books Available

When a customer purchases a book through the Shopify store, the purchase information is processed and the available-book count on the WordPress website is updated.

For example:

1,000 → 999 → 998 → 997…

This creates a live sense of progress and gives visitors a clear indication of how many books remain.

WordPress + Shopify Connection

The integration connects the content-focused WordPress website with the Shopify eCommerce store.

This approach allowed us to use the strengths of both platforms:

WordPress

  • Storytelling
  • Website content
  • Visual experience
  • SEO-focused pages
  • Book promotion
  • Dynamic book counter

Shopify

  • Product management
  • Book purchases
  • Order processing
  • eCommerce functionality

The result is a connected experience where the main website and online store work together instead of operating as completely separate platforms.

Key Features

Story Driven Website

The website was structured around the personal journey behind A Year of Iron and Pixels, combining written content, photography, and visual storytelling.

Shopify eCommerce Integration

Visitors can purchase the book through the integrated Shopify store without requiring the main WordPress website to handle the complete eCommerce process.

Dynamic 1,000 Book Countdown

A custom countdown system displays the remaining number of books, starting from 1,000 and updating based on completed purchases from the Shopify store.

WordPress and Shopify Integration

Custom development connects the WordPress website with Shopify, allowing information from Shopify purchases to influence content displayed on the WordPress website.

Responsive Development

The website was developed to provide a consistent experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Clear Purchase Journey

Calls to action throughout the website guide visitors from discovering the story to purchasing the book.

SEO Friendly Development

Although the website has a strong visual and storytelling focus, SEO was considered during the development process.

The website was structured with:

  • Clear heading hierarchy
  • Search-friendly content structure
  • Crawlable text content
  • Responsive design
  • Mobile friendly layouts
  • Meaningful internal links
  • Optimized image usage
  • Clear calls to action
  • SEO-friendly page structure
  • Dedicated content around the book and its story

The combination of useful textual content and visual storytelling helps create a website that is engaging for visitors while still providing search engines with meaningful information about the project.

Tech Stack

  • WordPress, Figma, Shopify

End Result

The final website provides A Year of Iron and Pixels with a digital home that combines storytelling, book promotion, and eCommerce.

The WordPress website acts as the main storytelling and SEO platform, while Shopify manages the book purchasing experience.

The custom integration between both platforms adds another layer to the user experience through the dynamic book counter. Starting from 1,000 books, the counter can reflect purchases made through the Shopify store, creating a visible sense of progress as books are sold.
